  1. Hi Rob.
I have been exchanging emails with J. Neilson lately. I first wrote him wondering about the missing tempering stage in Forged in Fire, which he explained. I then mentioned that although I used to make knives, (mostly stock removal although I did some forging), that I now made custom lockpicks (weird, I know). I wondered if he might know of a source for damascus scrap or cut-offs and he suggested you.
If I had your email address I could send you a picture or two, but basically my picks are like a slab handled mini knife 5″ – 6″ long in total, with the handle around 4″ and the pick about 1 1/2″ – 2″ long. Handle width is about 1/4″ wide x 3/8″ thick. The pick end is .030″ thick and various shapes.
The problem with using a slab handle is that it would hide the steel pattern, so I was thinking of either a complete damascus pick, (too heavy) or an integral slab style with a bolster and butt cap left and a shorter inset handle.
When I saw your marlin spike I laughed because by reducing the end to a .030″ pick and insetting a handle I would have my pick.
Anyway, this is really just for fun, so while I wouldn’t mind paying you for some cut-offs I wouldn’t want the expense of having you forge anything custom. $50 would be reasonable if you had a couple of nice pieces. 5 1/2″ – 6″ long and maybe 1/4″ x 1/4 ” or larger would be great. I no longer have a forge so stock removal is my only option.
Anything you can do would be great and if you email me directly at escher7@shaw.ca I will attach a picture or two. Meanwhile, I look forward to your appearance on Forged in Fire. J tells me the pressure is pretty harsh.
